Learn how to update the WingtraPilot software and the WingtraOne GEN II firmware from the 2.11 release and later.

Requirements to use the wireless firmware update:

  • No Blue license is associated with the connected drone
  • The drone is a WingtraOne GEN II
  • The connected drone has a firmware version >= 2.10

Updating the WingtraOne GEN II wirelessly is possible starting from the 2.11 version. If you have a WingtraOne GEN I drone, please follow the update instructions in the article Update WingtraPilot and WingtraOne.

When connected to the internet, WingtraPilot will inform you that a new update is available with the following message.

To enable the latest software improvements, please follow the instructions below to update your WingtraPilot and WingtraOne GEN II.

The updating process consists of three main steps:

Step 1: Download latest Wingtra version

download 2.11.1

  • Start WingtraPilot
  • Open the "Update" menu under the WingtraPilot "Settings" tab
  • On the left side (A) you will see the release information about the latest Wingtra release and a notice that this release hasn't been downloaded yet. The Wingtra release contains both a WingtraPilot and a WingtraOne firmware release. Using the drop-down menu, you can also take a look at the release information from earlier Wingtra releases
  • On the right side (B), click on "Download latest Wingtra release vX.Y.Z" to start the download of the latest Wingtra release. Make sure you are connected to the internet
  • Wait until the top progress bar is full and you see "Download complete" in (B). If the download is not complete within five minutes, close WingtraPilot and try again
  • You can now continue with the WingtraPilot update

Step 2: Update WingtraPilot

download release 2.11.1

  • In (A), click on "Update WingtraPilot to release Version vX.Y.Z"
  • Follow the installer. You may grant permission to install an application from an unknown source
  • After the installation is complete, WingtraPilot will close, and you will be asked if you want to open it again. Click on "Open"
  • In case the installation of WingtraPilot fails, you can also download it by clicking on DOWNLOAD WingtraPilot 2.13 and install it manually using the .apk file

Step 3: Update WingtraOne GEN II firmware

Starting from the 2.11 version, there are 2 options to update the WingtraOne GEN II firmware:

  • Update via wireless connection
  • Update via SD card

update drone 2.11.1

Updating the WingtraOne GEN II firmware from 2.10 to 2.11 is also possible with the wireless connection option.

For the wireless firmware update, it is recommended that the tablet is on Android OS version 11 or later.

Option 1: Update via wireless connection

To perform the wireless firmware update, the tablet's location service should be enabled:

enable location tablet

and location permission should be granted for WingtraPilot:

location permission WiP

You can enable the tablet's location service from Settings -> Biometrics and security -> Location and the location permission for WingtraPilot can be granted in Settings -> Apps -> WingtraPilot -> Permissions -> Location.

  • Make sure that your tablet's battery is more than 10%
  • Power up your drone
  • Connect the telemetry module to your tablet, stand close to the drone and start the update. Note that it might take some minutes to start. A connection between the drone and WingtraPilot will be established using the tablet as an access point.
  • The over-the-air (OTA) or wireless firmware update process happens in 4 stages (establishing connection, transferring update file, updating drone and verification) and the progress is indicated as a percentage.

  • WingtraPilot will let you know when the update is successful. Click on "OK" to finalize the process. The local hotspot will be closed when the workflow is completed and the popup is closed.

  • Verify that the tablet and the drone are on the same version. To do this, go to the "Settings" tab, then "General," and "About" page, and check for the version of the paired drone. Submit a support request in case the version number is not correct or if you are in doubt about the version.

Option 2: Update via SD card

The SD card update workflow is still available as a fallback option. If your WingtraPilot is in a version before 2.10 or you have a WingtraOne GEN I drone follow the steps below to update the firmware or check the article Update WingtraPilot and WingtraOne.

  • Ensure that your WingtraOne is powered off
  • Remove the WingtraOne SD card
  • Insert the WingtraOne SD card with the provided USB adapter into the tablet.
  • Click on "Select WingtraOne SD card to copy release version vX.Y.Z" on the Update page in WingtraPilot and copy the file on the SD card. Do not select a folder on the SD card but the SD card root directory itself (see below).

    • NOTE: If the process takes unusually long or if you are unable to copy the update (.tar) file to the SD card, try to reformat the SD card on the tablet of the laptop.
  • After the file is copied to the SD card, remove the SD card from the tablet and reinsert it into the drone
  • Power WingtraOne and connect the telemetry to the tablet
  • Once connected, an update dialog box should appear asking for the update of WingtraOne to start as shown below.  It might take a couple of minutes for the popup to appear. If it does not appear, click on the General tab so the following dialog appears.
    WiP_Update_FirmwareDetected_window
  • Click on "Update now" to start the update process. WingtraPilot will lose the telemetry connection for about one minute during the update process. Important: Do not shut down the WingtraOne during the update process
  • WingtraPilot will let you know when the update was successful. By clicking on "OK," you finalize the update process
  • Verify that the tablet and the drone are on the same version. To do this, go to the "Settings" tab, then "General," and "About" page, and check for the version of the paired drone. Submit a support request in case the version number is not correct or if you are in doubt about the version.

Troubleshooting of wireless firmware update

Connected drone is not compatible with the wireless firmware update

Only WingtraOne GEN II drones are eligible for the wireless firmware update. If you attempt to perform the wireless update while a WingtraOne GEN I drone is connected to the tablet, a warning popup will appear.

Requirements to use the wireless firmware update:

  • No Blue license is associated with the connected drone
  • The drone is a WingtraOne GEN II
  • The connected drone has a firmware version >= 2.10

If your drone belongs to one of the above cases, follow the instructions in the article Update WingtraPilot and WingtraOne

Waiting time before the update starts - it may take some minutes without feedback

Once the button Update via wireless connection is pressed, the process can take up to some minutes to start in case the drone was just powered up. During this time there is no feedback. Please wait before you repower the drone or try anything else.

It is recommended that you first power the drone, then connect the telemetry to the tablet and wait for the camera to get connected (camera icon black). Once the camera is connected, start the firmware update process.

Update error during  step 3: Updating drone

The drone might take some time before re-connecting to the tablet and the message that the update was successful pops up. Do not close the tablet or remove the batteries of the drone before the success message appears. Confirm the drone's firmware version in the Settings -> General -> About tab.

Telemetry module gets disconnected while establishing a connection

If the telemetry module gets disconnected while the connection is getting established, replug the telemetry module or make sure it is plugged properly. Reconnection should happen automatically when telemetry is working.

Wi-Fi automatically disabled during the update

On some Android versions, the wi-fi can get automatically disabled when the update starts. If this happens, do not enable it during the update. When the update is completed, it will be automatically re-enabled.

    Drone cannot connect

If you get a warning or an error message stating the drone could not connect to the tablet, disable the wi-fi on the tablet and try again. If you are in 2.10 version, repower the drone and try again.

    drone lost wireless connection

    Drone is repowered during update

If you repower the drone during the update process, you should abort the current update process and try again once the drone reconnects. Depending on the stage that the update will be interrupted, you might get an update error or a warning that the drone is unresponsive. In both cases, you should restart the firmware update process from start.
