Guidelines on how to handle surface damages

This article describes how to handle damages on the surface of the WingtraOne. You will learn when it is safe to fly and how to fix the damages.

Cracks on the wing surface

Cracks and damages on the WingtraOne surface can be of different sizes and in different locations. Usually, small cracks on the wing can be easily covered with duct tape, and flying is still safe. For longer cracks, the location and probability that they spread should be considered.

It is highly recommended to send pictures of any damage to Wingtra Support for a proper assessment of the extent of the damage. Wingtra Support will offer the best solution for each case.

Damaged but safe to fly

1. Scratches or dents on the surface

scratch1
  • Safe to fly
  • No need to cover the damage
  • If needed, put strong tape (i.e. duct tape, such as tesa 4662) over the damage
scratch2

Damaged but safe to fly with tape

1. Crack near the pitot tube

crack near pitot3

  • Safe to fly
  • Put a strong tape (i.e. duct tape, such as tesa 4662) over the crack to mitigate spread
  • Using an adhesive would not work without cutting out and rebuilding the whole structure

2. Small cracks on the wing

small crack on wing
  • Safe to fly, even without tape in case of urgency
  • When possible, use a strong tape, such as duct tape, like tesa 4662, or any strong water-resistant tape to cover the crack
  • Flying for a long time without tape can lead to water/moisture getting inside and to issues with the lamination
  • For such damage in this area, cover the hole with water-resistant tape and make sure to only hold the plane from the motors

Safe to fly only after fixing

1. Long cracks that can spread

long crack
  • Long cracks like the one in the picture can spread and make the wing unusable
  • To fix this without laminating, the customer needs to drill a hole through the surface of 2-3mm diameter at the very end of the crack and fix it with strong tape (duct tape)

Step by step instructions

fix1
  • Starting from the end of the crack as indicated
fix2
  • Drill a hole measuring 2-3mm in diameter at the end of the crack. We  recommend that you use a new drill bit and press gently while drilling
  • Take a picture of the hole and send it to Wingtra Support
fix3
  • Tape the crack and smooth it as you press it down to avoid air bubbles
  • Take a picture and send it to Wingtra Support

Unsafe to fly - wing replacement

More severe surface damages that do not fall in any of the above categories are not reparable and require replacement of the wing. In this case, you need to reach out either to your distributor or to Wingtra Support (if you have purchased your WingtraOne directly from Wingtra), providing detailed pictures of all the damages.
