Time required 25 min
Difficulty Moderate
Equipment
  • WingtraOne
  • Slotted screwdriver (included in the replacement kit)—if available a torque-controlled 0.4Nm screwdriver is better
  • XT30 retainer
  • 3x nylon bolts and nuts (5x50)
  • Replacement power unit (drivetrain) with matching color and ESC cover
  • Scalpel knife (only for 868/900 MHz drones)

There are 2 types of drivetrains: with holes and without holes. The installation process is exactly the same for both types.

In the article Replacing propellers you can find information about the compatibility between the drivetrains and the propellers.
All drivetrains with holes are shipped with a pair of propellers with screws.

Wingtra recommends customers to perform replacements themselves in order to minimize downtime. Wingtra's warranty is not affected by performing the below steps carefully.

Contact your local distributor if you prefer the replacement to be done as a paid service on your behalf.

Select your drone version

1. Replace the power unit on 2.4 GHz telemetry drones

The 2.4 GHz drones have 2 battery data cables connectors on the drone.

2. Replace the power unit on 868/900 MHz telemetry drones

The 868/900 MHz drones have only one data cable connector on the drone.

Step by step instructions

1. Replace the power unit on 2.4 GHz

Step 1 Prepare the WingtraOne for the replacement

  • Make sure the WingtraOne is not powered. Power off the drone is necessary to avoid short circuits when the electronics are exposed.
  • Insert the middle stand and place the WingtraOne on the ground or on a table.
  • Locate the drivetrain to be replaced.

Do not place parts or tools on your drone. This can cause surface damage. A mouse pad is a good alternative if you want to keep things on your drone while performing replacements.

Step 2 Remove the damaged drivetrains

step2a-3
  • Loosen the nylon bolt on the top of the motor mount using the slotted screwdriver to unscrew the bolt and the open-end wrench or your fingers for holding the nut from the bottom side.
Sometimes the nut is too tight to hold, especially in heavily used drones. In this case, you need an additional tool, like a plier, to hold the nut.
  • Pull out the bolt.
Make sure that you do not lose the bolt and the nut after you remove them.

step2b-2

  • Remove the orange cover.
  • Unscrew the second nylon bolt on the top of the motor mount using the slotted screwdriver and the open-end wrench or your fingers.
  • Pull out the bolt.

step2c-1

  • Unscrew the third nylon bolt on the side of the motor mount using the slotted screwdriver and the open-end wrench or your fingers.
  • Pull out the bolt.
step2d-1
  • Gently pull out the motor mount, and carefully remove the white cable retainer with the screwdriver. If for any reason it is stuck, carefully wiggle and pull.
Do not pull the drivetrain with force as it might damage the cables.

step2e

  • Unplug the two connectors in the red box, and put the old drivetrains aside.

Step 3 Place the new drivetrains

step3a-2
  • Take the new drivetrain, making sure that the colors match.
  • Place it in the wing and insert the front 2 bolts without nut.
Use the new bolts and nuts supplied in the replacement kit from this point on. Only use the old parts if a new one breaks.

  • Plug in the two connectors of the new drivetrain, as you can see in the picture, making sure that the colors match (green-labeled to the green side and red-labeled to red side).

  • Place the white cable retainer on the yellow cable clip, as indicated in the picture.
step3b-2
  • Remove the upper protection on the self-adhesive tape on the motor mount and place the ESC on the motor mount.
  • Make sure the holes align and the ESC is as straight as possible.
  • Press down the ESC quite firm on the resign and hold/press for about 5 seconds.
step3c-1
  • Insert the further nylon bolt and tighten it. This bolt needs to end up flush with the nut at the bottom.
step3d
  • Remove the loose vertical bolt.
  • Place the orange  ESC cover and inset and tighten the bolt. You might have to move and slightly bend the frame for the holes to align.
Tighten the bolts until you cannot hold the nut with your hand anymore. If the nut grips and you don't have to hold it tighten it till it gets hard and a quarter turn more.

step3e-1
  • Tighten up the horizontal bolt the same way as the previous ones.
  • Reattach the propellers if required following the instructions in the article Service: propellers.
  • Make sure that the propellers and the plane colors match and that the propellers are straight.
