Best Practices for transporting and shipping Wingtra Payloads

This article outlines best practices for safely transporting and shipping Wingtra payloads. Proper handling protects sensitive optical, electronic, and mechanical components from damage.

These recommendations apply to all Wingtra payloads, including:

  • LIDAR
  • MAP61
  • RE-P
  • SURVEY24
  • SURVEY61
  • INSPECT

General transportation guidelines

Wingtra payloads are precision devices and must always be handled with care. Proper protective packaging is essential to prevent damage.

Wingtra strongly recommends transporting all payloads in a dedicated payload hard case to ensure maximum protection.

Always follow these general rules:

  • Use a dedicated payload hard case whenever possible
  • Never transport payloads loose or unprotected
  • Do not transport payloads mounted on the drone
  • Protect from shock, vibration, moisture, dust, and extreme temperatures

Payload transport cases

Only the LIDAR payload by default is provided with a dedicated transport case. All other payloads are not supplied with a dedicated transport case by default; however, Wingtra strongly recommends purchasing one.

If you do not yet have a payload case, please contact your Wingtra Partner for available options

Payload-specific foam inlays for WingtraRAY payloads

Since May 2026, Wingtra includes payload-specific foam inlays with all WingtraRAY payload shipments, RAY upgrade mounts, and RAY replacement mounts.

These foam inlays provide additional support for the payload during transport and help reduce movement inside the case.

The foam inlay can be used in one of the following ways:

  • inside a WingtraRAY payload case
  • inside the additional payload cutout of the WingtraRAY transport case

Each foam inlay is designed for one specific payload only. Always make sure to use the foam inlay that matches the payload you are transporting.

Payloads shipped before May 2026 may not include a payload-specific foam inlay. If your payload did not come with one, continue following the standard transport recommendations above. Existing payload cases can still be used as before.

Important compatibility note (GEN II -> RAY)

WingtraOne GEN II payloads that have been upgraded to WingtraRAY do not fit in the WingtraOne GEN II payload transport case.

Transporting a WingtraRAY payload in a WingtraOne GEN II payload case can place stress on the payload and mount and may result in damage.

More info: Payload compatibility across Wingtra drones.

LIDAR-specific note

Only for WingtraOne GEN II:
    • Remove the payload’s GNSS antenna before placing the sensor in the transport case.
    • Do not remove the foam piece with the 2 holes from the transport case
    • Ensure the U-shaped foam insert that secures the payload from the top  is always used

    Shipping guidelines

    When shipping any Wingtra payload:

    1. Place the payload inside its dedicated transport case (strongly recommended).
    2. Place the transport case inside a secondary outer shipping box.
    3. Use sufficient padding material to prevent movement of the transport case.
    4. Ensure the payload and case are fully immobilized during transit.
    5. Clearly label the shipment as fragile equipment.

Failure to use proper protective packaging and secondary boxing may result in transport-related damage.
