WingtraRAY Batteries Best Practices: Usage, Storage & Known Issues

Introduction

This document outlines best practices for WingtraRAY battery usage and storage, along with common failures that may occur over time.

Best practices

Follow these recommendations to ensure optimal battery performance and lifespan:

  • Do not leave batteries in the drone when not in use. Even when powered off, the drone slowly drains the batteries.
  • Recharge after flying based on your next flight:
    • Flying again during the week  -> charge to batteries to full.
    • Flying after a week  -> use storage mode. (Batteries will take around 20 minutes to charge from storage mode to full charge)
  • Check battery terminals before charging or flying. Ensure they are clean, dry, and free of dust or debris.
  • Do not leave batteries empty for more than 24 hours after a flight.
  • If any of the LEDs remain constantly on, press and hold the button for 1–2 seconds to reset them. Batteries left in this state will drain quickly. More information about LED behavior can be found in the related  LEDs article.
  • Bring a second pair of cooled batteries to the field.

  • Hot-swap batteries (replace them one after the other) to avoid repeating the pre-flight process.

  • Once the batteries are charged, the charger will continuously top them up. Do not leave the batteries in the charger without having power from the wall, as this may discharge them.
  • Avoid overheating:

    • Keep batteries out of direct sunlight.

    • Ensure battery temperature is below 30°C (86°F) before takeoff when possible.
    • The drone will reject flight above 45°C (113°F)
    • If exposed to sunlight, keep the nosecone on.

Storage Guidelines

To maximize battery lifespan and maintain safety, follow these storage recommendations:

  • Temperature:
    • Do not store above 35°C (95°F) or below –20°C (–4°F).
    • Ideal long-term storage temperature: 20–25°C (68–77°F)
    • Avoid large temperature fluctuations.
    • Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place
    • Relative humidity: 0–80% RH
    • Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
    • Avoid condensation, water exposure, and freezing conditions/ environment.

  • Handling & Safety
    • Do not short-circuit the terminals.
    • Avoid mechanical damage.
    • Do not open or disassemble the battery.
    • Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
    • Do not store near metal objects that could cause short circuits.
    • Protect the battery from static electricity.
    • Recommended storage altitude: 0–2500 m (ISA conditions)

Known Issues

Solid Orange Light on the Battery Charger

A solid orange light may indicate one of the following:

  • Waiting state – Only one pair of batteries can be charged at a time. Charging four batteries simultaneously is not supported.

  • Charging issue – If the batteries are not charging:
    • First, place the batteries in Storage Mode and wait a few seconds.

      • Then, reconnect them to the charger.
      • If the issue persists, update the charger firmware by following the instructions in the related firmware update article.

Broken Handles

If a battery handle tears:

  • The battery should be replaced, as removal from the drone may become difficult.

  • In urgent situations, the battery can be used temporarily, but replacement is strongly recommended.
